While on a path of self-discovery and exploring the physical benefits of massage therapy, Jeff was drawn to the healing mental health aspects of massage treatments.
Jeff, having already worked for more than a decade counseling survivors and victims of violence, and having himself survived both a violent childhood (and as a survivor of workplace trauma), used massage treatments to assist and encourage his own positive mental health outcomes.
Jeff began treating with one of Hawaii’s first IFBB pro athletes in the late 1990s and learned quickly that most massage therapists had little or no working knowledge of bodybuilding and what these athletes need.
Having developed some effective skills working with these very different types of athletes, Jeff soon became sought out by several other bodybuilders following in these professional athletes’ path.
Jeff’s practice soon evolved to focus more on athletes and bodybuilders and a then-new growing trend of athletes who categorized themselves as physique athletes!
Jeff began to study more about the sport of bodybuilding (without having to go to a gym) and the science of muscle recovery. He learned how the body can heal itself and what types of massage modalities facilitate this healing and what types of massages are more counterproductive.
Jeff studied and learned various massage modalities, taking up not only the standard Swedish, deep tissue, and sport massages, but also learning both culturally traditional types of massage such as Hawaiian (lomi lomi) massage and shiatsu and then more clinical types of massage such as lymphatic draining and safe abdominal massage.
While working with a growing body-positive athlete population, the requests from his athletes for skincare treatments and professional waxing began to grow. Referrals to estheticians were not always successful as many were not comfortable working with these athletes. In 2012, Jeff made the decision to further his education by apprenticing under one of Hawaii’s premier estheticians and received his esthetician diploma and license in 2015.
Since then, Jeff has made waxing men’s skin in a healthy and manageable way a priority. Ignoring the minimal and inadequate recommendations in the skin care industry for waxing men’s skin and developing many of his own methods from waxing men and specifically those who are men needing a professional polished look.
Jeff’s next focus will be to learn techniques for bodybuilders who are now defining themselves into two very specific categories: Classic bodybuilders recapturing the days of the great Schwarzenegger and Zane athletes, and the even more massive athletes who are breaking all the current limits.
The name of BodyHaul was formally established over 15 years ago when a client, preparing for his first bodybuilding show, stated, “You should call yourself something like body overhaul, Jeff, since you have overhauled me!” -Skippy
Jeff now has over 20 years of experience proudly working with 36 pro athletes (and counting) as well as hundreds of athletes preparing themselves for the stage.
